I got myself to start doing things through ticketing/ incident responses

Split things into something:

  1. Problem description
  2. Root cause
  3. Immediate Actions / solution
  4. Corrective Actions

With checkboxes on the solution /corrective actions. Then I do the immediate actions

For example,

Laundry

  1. Problem description
    1. Laundry on floor
  2. Root cause
    1. No hamper
    2. Did not do laundry
  3. Immediate Actions / solution
    1. Find basket
    2. Collect clothes
    3. Wash clothes
  4. Corrective Actions
    1. Acquire hamper
    2. Create laundry schedule.

Each ticket is separate and gets moved from open to closed once complete so its not too many bullet points / checkboxes and a little less overwhelming. 3/4 are checkboxes.

That might not work for everyone, but it is so much more refreshing/constructive than all the defeatism. I'm not sure I could be that organized, but I do love a list!

One of my strategies is to treat it like getting into cold water. I force myself to jump in against my every instinct. Not easy to do but that framing often gets me over the hump. And just like the water it ends up being fine and is way better than the torture of wading in or never doing it.
