Totally agree that nothing can or should try to replace 2D animation. It's a magical thing. I follow a lot more indie animators because of it, and - in case you missed it - Glitch has released a couple really stunning 2D pilot episodes recently, Knights of Guinevere and Gameoverse. Both are superb, free, and mostly or entirely 2D.

Hey! It's always so nice to see you around Lemmy outside of the inktober community! :)

I haven't ever checked out Glitch's stuff, but I'm about 3 minutes into the Knights of Guinevere pilot, and I'm enjoying how dark the tone is already. It's so awesome to see people bypassing the old network tv pipeline and releasing self/indie-produced half-hour episodes according to their own sensibilities. Thanks for the rec!

I'm so tickled that I get to be the one who recommended them to you. And yeah, isn't it kind of a great time to be skipping the big studios and doing it indie? Modern production tech has never been better, and there's a huge appetite for anything that is less corporate, less focus-groupy, and more about strong creative choices. I've been considering grabbing a Dropout.tv subscription for that reason, after seeing a couple seasons of Game Changer. Might even fuck around and grab some Glitch merch while I'm at it, some of the Gameoverse stuff is kinda cute.

Definitely. Even accounting for YouTube's anti-long form, animation-hostile policies, it's never been so easy to produce, publish, and disseminate your animation on your own. It's also never been so easy finding and collaborating with such a wide variety of artists outside of an industry setting, either. It's still definitely a mixed bag, but there are definitely a lot of advantages in that mixed bag that weren't available to us before.

Also, Dropout is great! I love their content, and their people-over-profits principles make it so easy to want to reward their excellence. I love that they don't try to erect any barriers preventing you from dropping and re-subscribing month-to-month at your convenience, nor try to adopt all the anti-customer policies that mainstream services use to extract as much profit as possible, such as preventing screen/account-sharing. If you do pick it up, I hope you enjoy! :)
