    Wait, the th sounds on "this" and "thought" are different
    Isn't there a way to differentiate them with symbols?

    Absolutely! Eth was used for voiced, but it lost out to Thorn by 1066. English is full of letters þat make two sounds, and sounds þat are represented by two different letters. But if you were Icelandic, you'd still use boþ Eth (ð) and Thorn.
