A few of our diaspora have willingly returned due to ICE scares and the culture shock is already too much. The lower standard of living and more socially conservative population clearly makes them uncomfortable. It’s why I always say you should strongly consider these things if you plan to live in the global south after living your entire life in the global north.

I've always told people that I could never move to my parents country because I just don't fit in. The few times I've visited I'm sure I stick out like a sore thumb and I've never really been able to connect with my extended family. Everyone from my generation is either a bougie lib (mostly on my dad's side) or an evangelical (on my mom's side). The car culture there is probably on par, if not just as bad as it is in the US.

I seriously have thought of moving to a more socially progressive region with a lot of other Black people (which may still be somewhere in Burgerland for all I know), and where my family is from absolutely does not fit that mold at all. In fact, they recently recriminalized homosexuality, having first decriminalized it in 2018.

its kinda sad that imperialism and neocolonialism created a positive feedback loop wherein third worlders move to western countries for better opportunities and pay with most becoming frothing reactionaries (due to basic class interest) who would kill every single one of their own just for the chance to be accepted as white

not saying your diaspora are like that, obviously. but a lot are.

Oh that kind definitely exists. It’s every white Guatemalan who insists they have full European ancestry.

who insists they have full European ancestry.

lol. lmao, even.

A lot of whites don't even think of Spaniards as white because they speak Spanish. However racist you think Americans can be, for example, realize it's probably double or triple whatever you imagine.

Bold of spaniards to think of themselves as white given the 700-year history of Al-Andalus (on the other hand they did THE defining act of colonial violence that kicked off the genocides which eventually led to the creation of whiteness as a category so... yeah I guess they've earned it)

My issue is being disabled. I rely on a lot of medical supplies daily for stuff I won't gross out the class with. It might be out of the frying pan and into the fire. The first A in "ADA" isn't "Around the world."

You know that sort of thing is why my response to racists saying "don't like it? Just go back to your home country" tends to be so hateful toward them.

The global north sucks but this is my home and I actually literally can't easily go to my parents' home country because I'd fit in even worse. They'd treat me as an outsider there too, and actually with much better grounds because I'd be "the American". Culturally I'm not a fit. Language? I have the comprehension of maybe a 6 month old, if that. Religion? Apostate so that's fantastic. Heat tolerance? I think I would actually just die of heatstroke, and no, AC isn't the solution because brownouts are frequent.

As things have gotten worse I've wondered if I should try to go somewhere else -- if not my parents' home country then another place -- and I always land back on: at least I have friends here and I know the culture and the landscape.

Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.
