Internet medical expert here.

Arteries spray, so must have hit a vein. That is survivable if you get fast medical attention to stop the bleeding. It's dicey, but since it's already been over an hour, he either has enough blood left at this point or he doesn't.

    He lost consciousness instantly, indicating significant loss of blood pressure towards the brain, i.e., an artery was hit.

    Secondly, not just hit but completely severed, explaining the massive non-spraying blood loss; similar to why a garden hose without the nozzle just flows. Only if it were a small enough puncture it would spray.
