Chat is a text only community for casual conversation, please keep shitposting to the absolute minimum. This is intended to be a separate space from c/chapotraphouse or the daily megathread. Chat does this by being a long-form community where topics will remain from day to day unlike the megathread, and it is distinct from c/chapotraphouse in that we ask you to engage in this community in a genuine way. Please keep shitposting, bits, and irony to a minimum.
As with all communities posts need to abide by the code of conduct, additionally moderators will remove any posts or comments deemed to be inappropriate.
Thank you and happy chatting!

I'm sorry if this is stupid or something, but how do flea markets look in the US? Because usually in Poland you can easily buy a used (most likely stolen) bike for rather cheap at those. Or if you're living close to the border visit Germany and buy something from there.
Still, I hope you do find something serviceable for cheap in your area, and wish I could even recommend something but I literally only know that the US has garage sales and I haven't heard of much else. I dunno how alienated from your neighbors you are, but maybe asking around if someone has an unused bike you could borrow or buy could help? It really angers me that I can't help you directly and can only write this shitty comment. Sorry.
None of my neighbors have any extra bikes to spare or sell. So I'm just walking for now. Thankfully where I live there's a train service. It's not the best but it's doable.
