Los Angeles police have announced they are making mass arrests in the city’s downtown area, as people gathered in defiance of an overnight curfew imposed after days of protests against Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown and military deployment.

Late on Tuesday night local time, the LAPD wrote on X that “multiple groups” continued to congregate within the designated downtown curfew area. “Those groups are being addressed and mass arrests are being initiated,” it said.

The mayor, Karen Bass, had announced a 10-hour curfew for the area of downtown, where demonstrations against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) have continued. The curfew was to run from 8pm to 6am, Bass said.

This may be a bit heavy-handed, but it is done for a reason. Trump wants to use "lawlessness" as an excuse to send troops in.

By implementing this curfew and making these arrests, the LAPD can demonstrate that it has the situation under control, and there is no need for the Feds to get involved. If California's lawsuit against the Feds ends up working, and the court finds the troop deployment unlawful, this curfew enforcement might very well be the reason.

For the umpteenth time, Trump does not give a shit about the law. He will say whatever he wants, make up whatever he wants and do whatever he wants. Capitulating in advance to not "give him an excuse" is as productive as voting for Trump so he can't accuse you of rigging the election.

Trump will lie about any evidence. Fox News will rebroadcast his lies and edit videos themselves to support Trump's lies. MAGA will only watch Fox News and blindly believe everything they are told.

MAGA will only watch Fox News and blindly believe everything they are told.

Even after their entertainment channel was fined almost $800 million for lying to them.

Sure, but Fox will bury that any time it comes up, "oh, but the liberal courts made us say that because they didn't like the truth™" and then hide under the "we're just entertainment" excuse if questioned about it again.

Until they're forced to have a big disclaimer every couple minutes saying that they arent actually news, or just shut down outright for being so blatantly disingenuous, it'll never stop.

Sometimes I wish news channels could be forced to cite their sources.

While you are not arong that "he" doesn't care, his administration does. They have released several high profile people that they were ordered to release for starters. They are starting to lose more and more court cases. Each loss gives military personnel more ground to declare an order unlawful. The same is true of republicans who don't like him but feel powerless to oppose him.

They have released several high profile people that they were ordered to release for starters. They are starting to lose more and more court cases.

These are, in the big picture, momentary setbacks, and even then he only complies with these months after they're made, when the damage is already done. Trump is deploying the military against American civilians and laying out the groundwork for declaring martial law (which he has effectively already declared in LA). ICE is arresting people off the street and threatening to arrest political opposition. The fascists are trying, and for the most part succeeding, in creating a situation where they don't need to listen to court orders. No democratic system, and certainly not America's, is capable of surviving when one half of it refuses to recognize that the other half is hopelessly compromised. The system cannot help you for the same reason it couldn't help the Germans or Italians.

The same is true of republicans who don't like him but feel powerless to oppose him.

You mean slightly more palatable fascists? There is only one word to describe a Republican in 2025: a fascist. Do you expect the fascists to cooperate with you against their great leader?

Wow, I've seen goalposts move before, but those moved so far they aren't even in the same state.

This would be more convincing if they didn't have over 1/2 dozen officers cornering and then shooting a pedestrian with a rubber bullet: https://lemmy.world/post/31196039

You can't take away their hobbies that's unfair. Just think of those poor officers

Arbitrarily restricting the freedom of people, which of course provokes people to respond to it, to appease a Fascist government is not "having the situation under control". It is siding with the Fascists against the people.

If they are certain about the unlawfulness of ICE attacks, they could arrest those thugs, especially when they roam around unidentified and behind masks.

If they are concerned with the safety of protestors and want to show that they have the situation under control, they could organize with protest organizers to protect the protests against Trumps national guard or marine goons.

Instead they beat up and arrest the people.

Remember it was only this weekend that LAPD shot journalists covering the protests completely unprovoked and with the journalists being clearly recognizable as they were live broadcasting into a camera being pointed at their face. LAPD is absolutely on the side of Trump and happy to crack down on people.
