I've never owned a fridge with one and I don't think i'd ever get used to it. Too spooky!
I have a dedicated ice maker with an independent water tank and honestly, though it making and dropping ice doesn't bother me, listening to it struggle when the water needs to be refilled always makes me feel sorry for it. I'm pretty sure I'm the only person to refill it.
