Fun fact, stinkbugs produce a similar smell to cilantro. So to some people stinkbugs ironically smell nice.

What are you on about? Do you have different stinkbugs where you live? I like cilantro and stinkbugs smell nothing like it.

Try different genes. Cilantro tastes and smells like stinkbug to me, aka, disgusting.

I'll link a reddit comment for source: https://www.reddit.com/r/Entomology/comments/b5kv3l/comment/ejepo22/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

And if you don't want to open the link: "Stink bugs "stink" because of two chemicals: trans-2-decenal and trans-2-octenal. Interestingly, those two chemicals are also found in cilantro (Coriander sativum), for which the mystery of why some people hate the taste of cilantro with a passion has been researched; turns out that only if you have a specific variant of olfactory receptors you can actually smell these two chemicals. People who have these receptors perceive both stink bugs and cilantro as soapy and pungent, while all others perceive it as neutral to pleasant. The part of the population who perceives stink bugs / cilantro as unpleasant is dependent on genetic ancestry and ranges from 3-21%"

I struggle to believe that they'd be named stinkbugs if 80% of the population thinks they smell nice. Something doesn't add up with the information you're presenting.

Source: I like cilantro, and stinkbugs stink.

Just because its the same chemical doesn't make it smell the same. Try taking a spoonful of vanilla extract and you will find it does not taste like the smell. The ration and volume of the volatiles also determines how it smells.

Well that's because I didn't say 80% :) I said "to some people" and the study also shows it varies from neutral to pleasant.

Aight lemme just become a GMO so I can start likeling the smell I guess.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Some days I wish I could not smell it at all given how repugnant it smells to me.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Well yeah stinkbugs are repugnant.
