PowerDeleteSuite Bug? (discuss.tchncs.de)
submitted 2 years ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

I've used PowerDeleteSuite to edit all my comments on Reddit. After it was "done" I immediately looked at my top comments and only about 20 % were actually edited. Is reddit randomly blocking edits? Do I have to run it multiple times?

[Note: the link is for the archive, to not give Reddit unnecessary traffic. Here's a link to the original.]

Apparently r/pics is protesting through malicious compliance; the subreddit is open again, but all content being shown is uninteresting pictures of... who's John ~~Galt~~ Oliver?

And the moderators decided to actually consult their community, on what they should do. You could vote on two options:

  • Upvote this comment if you want /r/Pics to feature only images of John Oliver looking sexy. As of time of archiving this option was at +51k points.
  • Upvote this comment if you want to return to normal operation. As of time of archiving this option was -8k points.

Interesting detail on how the r/pics moderators worded it:

Anyway, we – the so-called "landed gentry" – definitely want to comply with the wishes of the "royal court,"

I personally didn't realise that there is such an implication on what Pigboy said - that if he's calling the mods "landed gentry", he sees himself as a king.

EDIT: as other users are pointing out, other subs are doing the same sort of malicious compliance, so I'll share them here:

  • r/gifs (archive link, (original link). As of time of archiving it has +21k points for John Oliver gifs only, and -5k points for returning to normal
  • r/art (original link) - as of now (7:20, São Paulo time), votes are still not visible. Same as above, John Oliver vs. normal operations.
  • r/aww (archive link, original link) - +56k "to only feature John Oliver, Chiijohn, and their lookalikes bein adorable", -2.5k to return to normal.
  • r/showerthoughts (archive link, original link). Voting on the days that the subreddit should be open or closed.

Let's backtrack to 2020. Back then there was some protest in USA about cop violence and racism, it had repercussions in Reddit (with a bunch of subs closing down in protest, as usual). kn0thing used this opportunity to resign from the board of directors of Reddit, claiming that he wanted to be replaced with a black candidate.

Perhaps kn0thing knew what would happen? Not the exact events, mind you; but he knew Reddit Inc. and spez well enough to know that they'd eventually fuck it up, lose a lot of money, and lose face. So he jumped off ship earlier, pockets and reputation unharmed.

What do you think about this?

(u/kn0thing, RL name Alexis Ohanian, is the co-founder of Reddit, alongside Steve "piece of shit" Huffman and Aaron Swartz.)

If you are using Power Delete Suite (https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite) to bulk remove all your posts, I recommend replacing their content with lorem ipsum (latin). Personally today's signals from spez and reddit were the final nail in the coffin for me. They have passed the point of no return.

There are numerous reports today of reddit undeleting people's posts.

So I was commenting on another post when I found myself rambling so decided to just make it a post. Not sure if this is a good place for it, sorry.

As far as redditors go, I'm probably more removed from the situation than some of you. I have no dealings with mods, admin, and I've only been active for the last year, and really only in super niche communities.

I didn't feel too strongly about this whole thing tbh. But as I've followed this topic, and the more I interact with the feddiverse, the stronger I feel about reddit based on principal.

Thought is such an invaluable resource for the common people, which is, and always has been, monopolized by a system that exploits us. It divides us. Look at what reddit is doing trying to get mods to turn on each other. It's just nasty capitalist tactics to make a buck off of....thought itself? Oh hell no. That just feels too convoluted to me from a pure logic standpoint. And from a principals standpoint, and I'm the kind of person who doesn't feel too strongly about many things, the dude can't abide.

Why do we need a thought middle man? There is no real need to take that out of our hands to begin with, when we have awesome people willing to take up that mantle for the sake of progress. Thanks to the people who are contributing by running servers, developing the software etc. You are seemingly on the edge of the ever expanding human understanding, of itself and its place in the world.

Thought should always be free flowing and uncontrolled. It is what makes us human. And I think, more and more, humanness is something innately missing in our everyday lives.

I'd like for my community to be a community. For the sake of community. As a basic biological need for happiness in this life, that has far too much needless suffering as it is.

So in the end, this is really an appreciation post, for getting to experience something like this with everybody.

Thanks for reading. Sorry for some of my clunky wording. Brain moves faster than my weary bones sometimes, and I'm not nearly as smart or refined as I'd like to be. Let's keep working to making this something to take pride in.

Love yourselves.

and feel free to discuss.

When you get to be compared with someone who dropped the ball, and people still say "he looks like a genius, in comparison with you!", you know that you fucked up.

Don't be fooled with all this focus on spez though. Even if he's gone, the company as a whole needs to wither before the IPO.

Initially i did not want to purge my account because I found it to be a valuable resource. But seeing this post was the last straw! I don't want to be part of reddit where it is threatening and trying to silence its own community's!

PS: First post on Lemmy!

Reddit's advertisers are already a bit wary. I honestly don't think it would take much more than a couple of dozen boycott threats via twitter, facebook, whatever for a marketing team to decide it's not worth the drama and move their advertising dollars elsewhere.

Unlike other controversies where brands can try to appeal to one side or the other, there aren't really "sides" to this. There's just people that are vehemently opposed to Reddit's current actions, and people that don't care and want to look at memes. The only people that are going to be happy that (eg) IBM are advertising on Reddit is Spez and his staff.

This seems like a simple thing the average Redditor can do right now, and I don't think it would take much to make a real impact.

I just fired off a bunch of tweets to the advertisers I can see (they seem very regional)...

Thoughts?

I'm a fully mobile user, so that limits my options. I don't just want to delete my account but also delete my posts and comments.

I was mostly shitposting but still had some 200k Karma so it could pinch Reddit a bit to remove that but it won't hurt users or Google search since I wasn't doing anything 'productive' or 'helpful'.

I want to highlight a situation that happened on a less well-known website that is all too similar to what's going on with Reddit at the moment.

The website Habitica is a retro RPG-themed website for self-improvement and habit formation. As users tick boxes off their to-do lists, their character gains experience, gold, and items. Social features are a major part of the site, with "guilds" which are larger public or private groups built around topics like health, career, or education, and "parties" small, private groups which complete in-game quests together. I've been an active user of the site for years, and it has been a great help in tracking and completing goals in my life like language learning. It's also worth noting that like Imgur and Discord, Habitica was born on Reddit.

Another major aspect of Habitica was its positive and welcoming atmosphere. Habitica's moderators went above and beyond to delete mean-spirited and trolling comments around the clock. Unbeknownst to myself and others, these moderators were volunteers who gave up hours out of their day for years to keep the site running smoothly, particularly when the site admins were off the clock (Habitica's mods operate site-wide; its parallel to Reddit's mods are called "guild leaders"). Not only were mods not paid, one also developed a very helpful 3rd party tool for managing guilds and "challenges".

One weekend a few months ago the mod team discovered an exploit which could have cost the company thousands of dollars in premium paid memberships. The mods caught this quickly and worked overtime to prevent this exploit from being publicized until admins came into work on Monday to fix it. After suggesting mods should be thanked for all their hard work, a long time mod turned paid admin was unceremoniously fired. In response, the moderators unanimously decided to go on strike. They, too, were let go. Thereafter any discussion of what has happened has been removed from public guilds, leaving many users in the dark about the whole situation. Since that time Habitica has been a shell of its former self. Behind the mask of positivity and community, was hiding yet another Silicon Valley private venture which only cares about the bottom line.
