Quick offer to @johnshirley2024, @annaleen, @cstross, @ewdocparris and other established Scifi authors. I'd like to make this an exciting community for scifi fans of all ages - would you be interested in doing an AMA on /m/scifi?

Beyond the usual blah-blah-blah, AMAs on Reddit were powerful ways to connect fans with creators and I'd like to continue that tradition here. If you're interested, feel free to DM me over at https://mastodon.social/@inkican and we can coordinate.

Best wishes,
Ink

Actor and former professional MMA fighter Gina Carano has sued The Walt Disney Co. and Lucasfilm over claims she was wrongfully fired from the series “The Mandalorian” in 2021.

In the suit, which was filed Tuesday in federal court in California, Carano alleges she was fired from her role as rebel warrior Cara Dune for voicing right-wing opinions on social media. She is seeking a court order that would require Lucasfilm to reinstate her or compensate her at least $75,000. Carano claims in the suit that she suffered emotional damage and lost millions of dollars in income.

“A short time ago in a galaxy not so far away, Defendants made it clear that only one orthodoxy in thought, speech, or action was acceptable in their empire, and that those who dared to question or failed to fully comply would not be tolerated,” the lawsuit says. “And so it was with Carano.”

It almost sounds like a challenge: Can you make a feature length movie with only one on-screen actor, one location, and a budget of less than half a million?

Written by Lucy Campbell and shot by Matt Vesely, eerie sci-fi mystery Monolith exists within these potentially tricky parameters. Almost the entire movie takes place in a modern, isolated house in the rolling Adelaide Hills, South Australia, following a disgraced journalist (Lily Sullivan) as she yarn-balls a weird global enigma for her new podcast series. The film could easily have been a dismally failed experiment, but Monolith's logistical restrictions actually help it shine, adding a claustrophobia and sense of realism that only heightens the core mystery.

Hopefully someone here knows what I'm talking about and I didn't just make the whole thing up as part of a fever dream.

I recall reading a book several years ago where one of the main plot points was that there was some kind of AI watching and recording humanity across the galaxy, but had been doing it for so much longer than designed that it was starting to break down or run out of storage space or something of that nature. It influenced some guy to head out and start looking for it to help or fix it. I don't remember much else, and all of the search engines just spam me with garbage sponsored AI bait, so I'm hoping someone here might recognize the broad strokes and be able to point me in the right direction.

Most motorcycle models seen in the movies can be had at a local dealership. But one iconic movie motorcycle hasn't been available because it wasn't even real. Until now.

Seven lingering mysteries from Godzilla and Kong's four Monsterverse movies finally received answers in Apple TV+'s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Multiple Monsterverse mysteries finally received answers in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 1. With Legendary's Monsterverse being a vast world where the existence of Titans touches countless lives, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters was able to tell a contained story separate from Godzilla and Kong's four movies. However, that's not to say it didn't overlap with events in the films in any way. In fact, Apple TV+'s show drew quite a lot from the movies and in doing so, included a few unexpected connections to the Monsterverse's past.

"The story takes place in a future where the polar ice caps have melted and people have taken refuge in Chicago, which is under a glass dome surrounded by 100 feet of water, in which giant, mind-controlling sea aliens lurk," Sneider's description reads. "The protagonist is a psychiatrist fighting to save their family, though nothing is quite as it seems."

Disney is remaining tight-lipped on the future of the building; speaking in June 2023, Disney Parks boss Josh D'Amaro said, "No hints yet, but something will happen."

Possible concepts for repurposing the Starcruiser include a much cheaper daytime excursion from Star Wars Galaxy's Edge and converting the facility into a traditional hotel experience. The latter seems more unlikely due to significant changes that would need to be made to the building to operate as a conventional hotel.

Carrying a lofty price tag of around $5200 for the two-day, two-night experience, Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser launched on March 1, 2022. After stronger-than-expected initial sales, Starcruiser bookings quickly stalled, forcing Disney to look to save costs and boost reservations. The final Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser voyage was September 28-30, 2023.

I talked about this a couple of weeks ago on the Microblog - I've produced a number of audio short stories out of my scifi shorts and the process is a journey unto itself. I thought people would like to see how it works so I'm doing an AMA to celebrate the launch of my next audio short - THE ROCKET.

This isn't just 'a veneer for a book promo.' Audio book production is fun, but work, and people have asked 'How hard is it, how does it feel, what’s surprising about it, what are the motivations behind it?' I'll answer that in a reply to this post.

I've described the process before on Imgur - here are the first two steps:

https://i.imgur.com/VWcp77K.png
First, there's having an idea and turning it into a story. The Battle of Victoria Crater was based on my ideas of what a space western would look like in the 21st century, now that we know so much about Mars, space travel, and Elon Musk. I wrote Victoria Crater in 2019 and decided to turn it into an audiobook in 2022. Onto the next step:

Next step - find a voice actor and work out a way for you to work together. In this case - after a quick audition, I found Jeremiah Jones (@JeremiahJonesVO) - a voice actor on the East Coast who was willing to work together with me on a profit-sharing agreement. Both of us are up-and-coming artists and we've learned the value of sticking together while chasing our dreams. I give Jeremiah the story, and he starts working on what the characters sound like ...

Meantime, I'm going to finish doing some internal work on the Youtube channel. I can answer questions about audio book production while I wait for stuff to upload. AMA!
