The Next Mission Begins!
Dear Hero Within Family,
It's been a while since you've heard from us, and I wanted to start by saying thank you.

Thank you for your patience, your encouragement, and for sticking with us over these past six months. We know we've been quieter than usual, and we truly appreciate everyone who has continued to support Hero Within.

Today, we're thrilled to finally share the news we've been waiting to announce...

We're back with Star Trek!
We're incredibly excited to announce that, in association with our friends at Factory Entertainment, Hero Within is once again officially licensed to create Star Trek jackets and apparel.

We're grateful to the entire team at Factory Entertainment for believing in us and giving us the opportunity to continue creating products for one of the greatest franchises ever made (and the best fanbase). We're looking forward to working together throughout the coming year and beyond.

Many of you have asked what our future plans were, and we've had to be intentionally vague. The licensing approval process took much longer than any of us anticipated, and we couldn't share details until everything was officially finalized. Thank you for your understanding while we navigated that process.

Now that we're cleared for launch, we're excited to announce that Hero Within will be making our return at San Diego Comic-Con at Booth #1943!

We'll be debuting our Star Trek Collection along with brand-new SDCC exclusives. Admittedly, we're a little behind our usual planning schedule because of the extended licensing process, but we're giving it everything we've got to make this year's convention a memorable one.

And that's especially important because this year marks a major milestone for us...

10 Heroic Years
This San Diego Comic-Con kicks off the celebration of Hero Within's 10th anniversary! Over the past decade, you've helped turn a dream into a community, and we couldn't have reached this milestone without you.

To celebrate, we'll have some special heroic anniversary swag available to commemorate the occasion. We can't wait to celebrate with everyone in person.

As a sublicense of Factory Entertainment, there will be a few changes to how Hero Within operates going forward. I'll be sharing more details about those changes in another email later this week.

We'll also be sending a dedicated San Diego Comic-Con email with a full look at our exclusives, convention schedule, and special events so you won't miss any of the fun.

Finally, thank you once again for your incredible patience over these past six months. We are beyond excited to be creating new Star Trek apparel for this amazing community once again.

One last favor—if you've enjoyed what Hero Within has created over the years, we'd love it if you would like, follow, and subscribe to Factory Entertainment on social media and send them a thank you. Their partnership has made this exciting new chapter possible, and we're incredibly grateful for their support.

We can't wait to see you at San Diego Comic-Con.

Live long and prosper,

Tony B Kim

This scene made me laugh so hard. It's a slow burn but it's worth listening to the full "script".

I released v0.3.0 of my LCARS Star Trek Niagara Launcher Theme project.

For anyone unfamiliar, Niagara Launcher is an Android launcher/home screen replacement with a clean vertical app list instead of the usual grid of icons. I like it because the layout is already kind of minimal and interface-y, so I thought it would be a fun base for making a phone feel more like a Star Trek LCARS panel.

Niagara Launcher: https://niagaralauncher.app/

My project started as me trying to make Niagara Launcher look more like LCARS, but it has slowly turned into a more general LCARS wallpaper/icon/theme generator. This update is probably the first one where it starts to feel like a proper system instead of just a pile of cool-looking experiments.

The big change is that palettes are now shared across the wallpaper generator, icon generator, and gallery. I added a lot more categorized palettes too, including:

  • Classic LCARS
  • Trek faction-inspired palettes
  • Pride/identity palettes
  • Regional/flag-inspired palettes
  • Accessibility modes
  • Retro computing colors
  • Space/nature themes
  • General mood/function stuff

There is also a custom palette editor now, so you can directly change the LCARS block colors.

The other big thing is that wallpaper panel rhythm and color mapping are separate now. Before, the shape/layout pattern also determined which palette colors got used, which made some palettes come out weird. Now the rhythm controls the panel proportions, while color mapping controls how the colors are distributed.

So rainbow, pride, and flag-style palettes can actually behave more like themselves instead of getting shoved through the old LCARS role-color pattern.

The icon generator has matching color-mapping options now too, and the gallery got cleaned up with better filters, no weird caps, and live local-font previews for installed Trek/decorative fonts.

Still very niche, still very Star Trek, but it is getting a lot more useful now.

This was difficult for me to watch without thinking of my grandfather. Probably the ad he saw that made him so excited for “Broken Bow”.

In the very first episode of Star Trek: the original series, we see a white Captain reporting to his black Admiral boss, a black woman on the bridge just a couple years after Jim Crow was abolished, wearing a short skirt (a symbol of feminist liberation at the time), a Japanese helmsman on the bridge only 20 years after the internment camps, a Russian crewmate on the bridge during the Cold War [edit: actually did not appear until Season 2 but the point stands], and the foundation of the modern concept of queercoding.

In the very first episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, we see male crossdressing crew members, a female officer on the bridge in charge of security, a literal ship's counselor stationed at all times on the bridge, a single mom raising her teenage son on her own while juggling a full career in medicine, a blind mechanic whose "disability" is shown to be a strength, and an angry, all-powerful godlike being who is revealed to be simply a petulant child masquerading as a deity.

In the very first episode of Star Trek: Deep Space 9, we see a black man gain a powerful command position, respect the hell out of the customs of a religion he didn't understand, show respect and equal treatment to members of three other alien races he didn't understand, appoint a female guerilla fighter who defeated imperialist fascists to a position of authority within his administration and defer to her judgement in areas of her expertise, accept his friend's gender change, and tell his son he loves him.

Star Trek has always been woke. You just grew up to be a bad person.

I hate to bother you guys with something this lame but I've been searching for weeks and I've been giving her all she's got captain, but I can't find this image anywhere.

The image in question is a "meme" (twitter post screencapped and cropped), the subject of the post was a metaphor for worker burnout using the warp drives as the metaphorical device. The basics were "the enterprise can only sustain max warp for X hours, it usually runs around warp Y. You can't work at 100% all the time." but y'know a lot more eloquent.

My boss needs to be accidentally sent this meme, "I totally meant to send it to a friend.."
