Never used them because their software wasn't open source, and thus meant I would be unable to switch to another provider. Seems I made the right choice.

Everyone go vote at their feedback website. There are several posts in the General Suggestions section that suggest Andy Yen step down. Mark them as critical.

I am, once again, offering to take over as CEO of Proton.

My work focuses on nonprofit-stakeholder-government relations. Specifically how organizations mediate between state agencies and stakeholders. No agenda beyond aligning mission, vision, and values, and keeping it that way.

Reach out if you prefer that to help guide Proton somewhere other than the trash bin of distrust.

It's a bit surprising how many CEO's express disdain for their users and employees.

When employees are reduced to an "input resource" number on a spreadsheet, and they sit insulated from user complaints, and likely surround themselves with sycophants, I suppose it's inevitable.

Power corrupts, you can see it all around us once you start looking.

Yes, but also the corporate world has a nasty tendency to promote psychopaths to CEO positions because they think a lack of humility is the same as competence.

It's not just in the corporate world. Trump is a good example. He's a complete douchebag and obviously has no clue about anything, but he somehow makes up for it with his extreme self-confidence.

The world is extremely complex, so it's understandable that posers who claim to have figured it out are popular. I think many people even know that the guy they're following is full of shit, but they can't accept that they are victims of forces they don't control or even understand, so they lie to themselves to at least feel a little bit of security.

Not surprising one bit if you understand how Capitalism works. We are just tools of the bourgeoisie.

The only reason I haven't cancelled yet is because I moved my family, including my parents, onto a family plan with them, and that's going to be a lot of work to move everyone again.

But this shit fucking sucks. I recommended this product to my loved ones because it's supposed to be trustworthy and secure, and now I find out it's neither of those things.

If you're a Proton customer right now and not in a position to simply cancel your account, submit a support ticket laying out your concerns. I got a detailed and lengthy response back within a day (one that was clearly not a form letter either, it directly addressed all the points I raised). Flooding their support channels will make it clear that they are in some serious shit here.

Write to the Proton Foundation too. Demand that Yen be removed from the board and the company, and that serious changes be made to the leadership at Proton to ensure this never happens again.

The advice I use for myself is always assume a service will either turn shitty enough that you need to leave, or just shut down due to some reason, so I try and only use services that make it easy to move away from.

So instead of Proton or Tuta, use a normal email provider that provides IMAP and supports a custom domain name. There are good ones around for privacy and features like Mailbox.org or similar.

A domain is ~$12/year and ensures you (hopefully) never need to change a bunch of emails on accounts again even if moving to a different email provider.

I’m moving off of proton due to this and it’s just me. It’s still difficult finding a better solution. Good luck.

    Guilty.

And I made sure they knew precisely why.

Checking privacytools.io, I see they have choices that aren't great alternatives to Proton's ecosystem. For example, NordVPN (not a great product) and Mullvad (didn't the owner contribute to a Swedish nazi party?)

So...is there a curated set of recommendations to replace all Proton products?

God dammit... this totally validates my procrastination in signing up.

I suspected my distrust of Proton would eventually prove right. Too bad.
