Futurist Jamais Cascio calls it a BANI world. This resonates with me:

  • Something I count on suddenly stops working. (Brittle)
  • Worry makes even small decisions feel hard. (Anxious)
  • One little thing changes my whole day. (Nonlinear)
  • I read more and more, but still can't make sense of things (Incomprehensible)

Sometimes, the next step is enough. You don't need to map the whole road before walking.

What helps you when the world feels like this?

A surreal illustration of a BANI world: a fragile, cracked-looking planet Earth hovers over a desolate, fog-covered landscape. Torn and crumpled newspapers drift through the air around the globe, while two winding roads curve toward a horizon glowing faint red and orange. Small points of light trace the road ahead, hinting at a way forward through the gloom.

This is kind of a jumbled mess of an argument, which is what I expect from a futurist. Two of the four items are traits of autism, the last is a personal problem, and only the first references the physical world (brittleness).

I think the answer to especially the last one, the confusion you're feeling, is understanding late-stage capitalism, but it's just another enactment of the Grand Theory of Social Enshittification, where power acceleratingly accumulates to fewer and fewer people until eventually the needs of society are sacrificed to the benefit that few. Ultimately, society collapses, either through economic stagnation or violent revolution, or both.

But maybe you meant something different

Thank you for your comment. I’m using the BANI framework here as a prompt for personal reflection. These are some everyday experiences it brings to mind for me.

I think it would be interesting to hear about what your personal experiences are, to help contextualize what you're talking about.
