🤣 nobody will ever trust us again unless we rewrite the constitution to ensure this never, ever, happens again. That's not happening so buckle in, we're as loved as North Korea and Russia.

Exactly. Your archaic anti-democratic system concentrates too much power to very few people whose elections get cosmic-level significance. Your political culture reveres the supposed wisdom of your founding daddies as if political thought peaked in the late 1700s. This structurally produces chaotic outcomes and an inability to adapt. Mind you it's not a matter of codifying the conventions Trump broke. It's about rethinking what you mean by democracy. Hardening the conventions does not solve the problem. Since American political thought loves comparisons to ancient Rome: hardening the conventions is what Sulla did. It did not save the Republic, it just ossified its inability to reform and defined the rules of the antirepublican game that people like Pompey and Caesar had to play in the road to Empire.

As long as Trump retains veto power and the ability to issue executive orders, all Democrats can do is slow the bleeding, unless Republicans grow a spine.

Even the most useless Democratic agenda is less harmful to our society than the burning and pillaging of our communities and social liberties carried out by Republicans over the last two years.

    our society

I don't think the article is intended to speak to changes within the US.

I don't think the damage done by the current US administration is limited to the borders of any single country, but society at large.

Oh I see, I made an assumption about what "our" meant, my bad.

I'm not saying things haven't gotten worse for the world this term, but the article talks about how foreign trade policy wasn't really modified by the dems in the last admin:

President Joe Biden brought more stability to the Canada-U.S. relationship but not much change. He kept many of Trump’s first term tariffs in place, despite promises to reverse them, and expanded other protectionist policies.

And that there aren't necessarily plans to do so next time:

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is considering a run for president, told CTV in August that he couldn’t guarantee Trump’s tariff policies would be reversed under Democratic leadership.

One factor Democrats likely are considering is how to deal with the United States’ $40-trillion debt problem. Trump has argued tariffs bring in much-needed revenue — although they have yet to make much of a dent in the U.S. balance sheet. Democrats have not said how they plan to deal with the problem.

    Duh?

Even if Democrats take the house and Senate, Trump controls the white house and Republicans own the Supreme Court.

We will likely stop harming Canada (ex: House and Senate can hold back Trump and prevent further damage), but we can't undo the damage until 2028.

Canadians are smart enough and understand our politics. They know 2028 at the soonest and even by then, it will take years or even decades to rebuild trust.

And the House/Senate election isn't even done yet. It only takes one standard polling error and bam, Republican sweep again. Literally that, all these races are within singular standard deviations. I hope the error favors Democrats this time but we don't have anything locked down yet.

It's a long road ahead for all of us. Canada can and should plan without USA for the near term. But we Americans will eventually turn the ship around.

Even if Democrats take the house and Senate, Trump controls the white house and Republicans own the Supreme Court.

I think you may have missed the wider point. The article's thesis was that we can't expect these policies to be cancelled because even when the democrats are in control, they do not roll back these policies.

For example, it used the Biden administration as recent evidence that democrat control doesn't mean walking back republican policy, even if the dems promise to roll back those specific policies. It also noted that prominent dems are not looking at rolling back tarrifs should they win in 2028.

Canadians are smart enough and understand our politics. They know 2028 at the soonest and even by then, it will take years or even decades to rebuild trust.

Canada realizes it doesn't matter (to the wider world) who has control. Until recently the overall goals of the two countries were in line so it wasn't a problem.

Who thought that tensions would be relieved after the mid-terms? Certainly not patriotic Canadians.

Why would it? If someone threatens your family, threatens to take your house, threatens to attack you, tries to hurt your finances.. and then what.. puts some restraint on it for now because some family came over for the holidays.. why would that change anything? Once you’ve shown you’re capable of that behavior, it can always return. At that point you need treaties, shows of good faith, mutual goals and checks, you have to have the leaders marry their children off together or something.

I thought it was an interesting article because of the intense reaction I've seen to the ratchet meme and others around that concept by people in the USA.

I guess I thought that maybe my (non mainstream) political views made it seem pretty obvious and not exactly a hot take, and I shouldn't expect it to be a wildly held view. This article made me consider that I am probably influenced by being someone outside the USA, and what I have observed in terms of the changes to foreign policy over my decades of existence.

Maybe it makes a massive difference internally, but it feels extremely surface level externally, i.e. the leader being polite and well spoken vs bumbling.

One of the reasons the person in the article holds this view is that Biden did not undo all the tarrifs of the first term, despite promising to.

So I'm sure no one will be sad to see trump gone, it doesn't mean the tariffs or other unfavorable policies will be reversed.

Why would the people in power undo all their hard work?

The "good cop" never holds the bad cop accountable, because the "good" cop likes the results the bad cop is getting.

We have way, way more in common with Europe than the US now. It'll take a hell of a lot for me to ever trust the US again, and by that time we'll be better integrated with the rest of the world.

    America is dying. Good riddance.
