If it were the absolute end goal for a PhD to continue on in academia this would be worrying.

However because of how academia works with its very very limited number of open professor positions and terrible working conditions until you land tenure, it hasn't been a prime choice for students for a while now.

I swear half the posts on here are like

"59 year study has concluded that humans require water"

"Scientists in Germany have determined that children who spend more time on their phone typically look at their phone more than children who spend less time on their phone"

"Breaking News: cigarettes potentially linked to health problems"

"Do you have trouble reciting the alphabet backwards while dribbling a soccer ball, hula hooping, as well as rubbing your tummy and patting your head? You may have brain cancer"

Among PhD graduates who completed their undergraduate degrees in the United States, those with AI-generated abstracts were 17% less likely to be employed in academia than were graduates who did not use AI. However, using AI made those graduates 16% more likely to be employed in industry than those who did not use it. The authors found that the link between AI use and landing a job in academia was less pronounced for graduates who did their undergraduate studies outside the US.

Expectedly, the title does not reflect the nuance of the article

Do we even want most PhDs in academia?

We already don't. Like 15% of postdocs become professors and its similar for PhD to postdoc. A vast majority of PhDs go to industry or government work.

As to whether you want most PhDs in academia that is a values question of whether a PhD does more for society in academia or elsewhere.
