I love tetris. It might be the first real game I played over and over again. I know I had a copy for my DMG (gray gameboy) growing up.

Sometimes, if I drink enough coffee early in the morning, my ADHD does that thing where instead of energizing me, it just makes me want to take a big nap. The last couple of times I had this happen, my first thought was "I should play some Tetris". I've done it twice so far when feeling that foggy, sleepy feeling, and each time I feel like it wakes me up, and knocks me out of that fog.

Anyway, Tetris is cool.

You can tell tetris was invented in the Soviet union because it was good, all about perpetually building, and still in use 40 years later.

whaaats the deal with tetris??? am i right???

suddenly a horizontal I-piece fast drops from the top of the stage space, flattening jerry seinfeld and squeezing his organs fluids and assorted viscera out in a fan of blood and gore, coating the front row (splash zone!)

I rebuilt Tetris in Godot piece by piece and of all of the classic arcade games that I've programmed it was by far the most demanding game. the specific randomization rules (did you know that the original used different randomization from the one on the Nintendo which uses different randomization from what's standard now? I do!), sliding, T spin detection, copying score tables and combo tables, input buffering and DAS and so many more little things that I've forgotten about, it was a nightmare but it taught me a lot.

Partly what makes it so difficult is that there's so much expectation around Tetris that there isn't around, say, Space Invaders. if you just made a straight one-to-one recreation of the original Electronika version people would say that it is barely functional and sucks. so much of the game that we consider Tetris is essentially patches that have been applied to the base game over the past several decades and it's many many re-releases.

it's one of the purest expressions of "video game", I absolutely love it. 10/10.

On Hardcore Gaming 101's Top 47,858 Games of All Time podcast, out of the 1651 games they have rated so far, Tetris is #1.

I don't personally think it's going anywhere, either. Can you imagine a game that gets 4 or 5 gaming obsessives to agree that it's a better game than Tetris? I cannot.

From each shape according to its ability, to each shape according to its needs

Tetris is such a minimalist form of video game that accommodates a diversity of player choices. It's also iconic of a specific time and yet remains quite timeless despite that. I really like using "Tetris" as a verb to describe things like packing for a trip or arranging furniture, etc.

My spouse and I play tetris as a way to talk through things. It puts you into the perfect flow state for that, as it engages all the fidgety energy of your mind, clearing the way for conversation. I don't practice or try to git gud at Tetris, because that's not the point for me.

Despite what hexbears would like to believe, the human brain is similar to an autocomplete function and Tetris pushes most of the buttons necessary to flood out aspects of our short term memory. ouroboros

    Citation needed

Actually you need way more than a citation, you first need to clarify what the actual argument is.
