I put poly on it, then sanded it off, then procrastinated for a couple months, but today I decided it's going to be done.

So I put a quick coat of 50/50 beeswax and mineral oil and called it a day

It's a thing of beauty. In a similar boat with a rocket obsessed toddler I'm fighting every urge to try something like this. The unfinished entertainment center in the garage still haunts me.

Looks great. I like oil finishes. They give wood a warm glow. Nicely done.

I super appreciate the craftsmanship and I have seen pretty much every post as it came out I think, so don't take this the wrong way, but do you ever look at this (or other long projects) and be like "wow and I don't even really like it anymore?"

If your kids are like mine prepare to find it embedded in the dirt under the porch or something similar. Oh well.

I really wanted a semi-gloss finish, but finished is better than ruminating ad infinitum

Yay! Got it done before your kid decided they don't care about rockets anymore, I hope? 🚀

If so it's still cool to have for when they start thinking about doing some woodworking of their own

He actually just mastered the phrase, "three, two, one, blastoff". (By mastered i mean it's barely intelligible)

He was very excited to have it, I just need to diligently remind him to not bang it on stuff, I don't know how strong the leg joints are

All those angles and curves on joins scare me, but looks great.

    You have no idea.

Perfectly matching a surface that curves on two axes is hell
