Heads up on physical PaySafe Cards as an alternative to physical Steam Gift Cards [DE] (lemmy.ml)

I just learned (and successfully tested) that we don't need an account to use PaySafe. I thought that was mandatory in order to pay anywhere, like PayPal is. And Steam allows paying (or adding to wallet) directly from the PaySafe code. Meaning, we can buy the code in a local shop anonymously and just add it to the account.

When asked to pay in Steam, just select PaySafe as the method, then the webpage to PaySafe will open where you enter the code from the receipt. After a minute or two, you should get a notification (usually through email). It's almost as easy as using a Steam Gift Card. At least here in Germany, Europe.

This is relevant for me, because physical Steam Gift Cards are official discontinued (the rest in the market will be usable, they just don't produce any anymore). And PaySafe works for me. In fact, I wonder to where I can pay with PaySafe else, outside of Steam. But that is a bit off-topic here off course...

Did you know this? Can you use PaySafe in your country? I hope PaySafe will stay as it is. What about the other Gift Cards, will they go away too or can people buy them for the consoles and other shops like Epic Games on PC?

    Thanks for the listing. Interesting that PaySafe is not an option. Do you have PaySafe cards at all or is this not a payment method that is not available in the states at all? According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PaysafeCard it is available in 50 countries:

    As of 2023 PaysafeCard is issued in approximately 50 countries—covering most of Europe and North America, Australia and New Zealand, and some countries in Western Asia and South America.[5]

    Countries with PaysafeCard available include Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kuwait, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Moldova, Montenegro,[6] Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates,[7][8] the United Kingdom, the United States and Uruguay.[9]

    Maybe Steam does not have it integrated in all regions where this is available.

    According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wero:

    The service initially focused on person-to-person transfers, and from November 2025 expanded to e-commerce payments.[8] In-store payments started in September 2026 through the complete switch of the established Payconiq payment network to Wero in Luxembourg.[9]

    So it started this months to be usable in stores. I assume it will be integrated into Steam then, I hope so. I didn't look into it in detail. Currently looking on the webpage https://wero-wallet.eu/ . I assume a bank account or identification is required.

    In-store payments refers to physical store locations. Steam is e-commerce. Wero has been ready for this for almost a year now and if the merchant supports it, it works like a charm.

    That said, note that Wero is essentially an instant SEPA transaction so you obviously need a bank account. And, which is maybe not so obvious, your bank needs to support it. Essentially most (or all?) Genossenschaftsbanken and Sparkassen in Germany do; private banks not so much as of yet.

    I do not recall having seen pay safe cards, but I live in a rural area where we have a Walmart, and a local supermarket. The supermarket stopped carrying gift cards a year or two ago, and I rarely go to the Walmart.

    That said, I feel we have fewer payment options in the states. I have been playing a French game for the last 20 some odd years, it has options to pay for in game services. There have always been a ton of options included that I have never heard. Even the option to pay by adding the cost to your phone bill.

    You should be able to use multiple card codes to pay for a single transcation. So you don't need to work in whole numbers only.

    And there are tools (or inspect element in a browser) that allow you to add arbitrary amount of many to steam. A great way to use rest of a card fund, if you bought something else with it

    Oh so each card acts like a credit card then? Steam does not charge anything for using PaySafe, but some other shops do. So I get the full money from the card to Steam. I just learned that every month PaySafe** charges a little fee for having money on the card**. Just be warned about this. So I would not wait any longer than a month anyway.
