i think it beats it by a few years, but the story about vietnam vets getting spit on was completely fabricated and spread around as though it actually happened.

It was actually based on a white woman who was doing fraud. In classic GOP fashion they implied she was black to be racist. Now its just a racist dogwhistle. There was a citations needed episode about it way back when.

It was the first someone invented a guy to tell "the senile president who believes the last thing he heard" to get made at. The Dollop talked about this in their Regan episodes where he read it in a letter and it just bloomed from there

Yeah figured as much, but I didn't know it was based on a real person.

You can read about Linda Taylor to learn more about the fraud she was committing, but it was something like 80 different aliases receiving benefits and despite claiming she'd received millions, they only actually confirmed $8000 of benefits were received.

It was based on a real person but then it got blown out of proportion.

The blowing out of that proportion was accomplished with racism.

It's the classic thing of "We have done an investigation and two people have been found to be doing this thing out of the hundreds of thousands that use and rely on it (and both of them are white)." and Republicans going "SEE! We are wasting hundreds of thousands of your hard earned tax dollars on THEM, we need to cut these programs!" And then Democrats immediately capitulating on the premise of the argument because they wanted to cut the welfare anyways to create a desperate population that has to vote for them.

I'm sure there's people that take """advantage""" of programs knowingly but I don't really give a fuck since banks are allowed to fail on purpose with full knowledge their board comes out richer from government subsidies. Also that phrase was only ever used specifically towards black women to be racist.

So I'm feeling a strong yes.

I think historically masons predates this but I think it is a thing that has simply always been done
