Technically, when installing a fitgirl rip, it is doing an extraction only, just with some extra UI elements and other features like installing dependencies.

    With the added complexity that it can fail for reasons I don't comprehed. If it was just extracting that wouldn't fail under any circumstances.

    The only times it has failed on me was because either the storage device or RAM were faulty. It's definitely worth it to check both for errors every once in a while, as financially devastating as it is to replace either.

    Never had a fitgirl install fail. Make sure your download was complete and not corrupted or missing required files. And make sure you have enough RAM not including swap. Some of these games use pretty heavy compression that uses a whole lot of RAM. And it seems swap sometimes causes the decompression to fail. Not sure why though.

    why does it require admin rights to run, then? right at startup, and if you try to run it with a tool that fakes admin rights, it will crash (unlike other installers it can successfully make run)

    They need admin privileges to write to directories such as C:/Program Files, if I had to guess - I didn't need privileges when installing Halo: Combatevolved Butworse on Linux

    but I always installed them on my other drive where it did not need such privileges. it works on linux because here everything runs as admin (in the wine world, it's not admin in the linux world)

    It's not that Wine runs things as an administrator, Wine emulates the Windows virtual filesystem by creating and using a directory in your home (by default), which means you own the entire thing;

    with Windows, if you have a separate drive and *you* create a folder in it, even if you call it "Program Files", it's going to let you access it freely because it's yours.
    However, the existing Program Files folder in your OS drive (C: by default, idk if you can change its volume letter) is owned by... I have no idea, actually, but it's a system account, not yours.

    The last paragraph may be inaccurate, I was much less tech literate when I was still daily-driving Windows.

    I wish every game was like that AND the game saves were always in the directory.

    I want to download, play, backup after I’m done without needing to manage all the save locations.

    Can't tell if you're joking or not. US federal minimum is still $7.25 but places like California and Connecticut have higher minimums in the $16+

    plus they are other country than US, each with different minimum wage. I ballparked it.

    the point being: whatever you buy, you sacrificied a lot of time for it (some more than other, obviously)

    My state voted for and passed a minimum wage raise, which would continue incrementally for the next few years, and paid sick time ballot initiative. The state legislature repealed the sick leave and removed the minimum wage increases from the future. Yay democracy. Cunts.
