In b4 the "my company still purchases 3 billion WinRAR licenses every year" comments.
But comment was not in before the 3 billion comment?

Do people even still need to use WinRAR? I mean, the rar format isn't even that prevalent anymore, not even for piracy stuff.....
It was useful 20 years ago, but like, most OS have native support for it now, making it even further useless to download a WinRAR.
Yeah I thought everyone used that. Why bother with Winrar?
I think it’s mostly out of spite.
I use peaZip because I'm a hipster
I haven't used WinRar since I discovered 7zp hella years ago. Not only is 7zp 100% free, it's faster and has better compression than WinRAR.
It's what I used for an extremely long time, so i just sort of.. kept using it. I've only recently swapped to 7-Zip. I think the only feature it has that 7-Zip doesn't is making part files? But I could be wrong.
part files is what made WinRAR so popular with the piracy community. Especially back in the before times, when you were direct downloading and an internect hiccup would cause a download to fail/restart. Being able to download a thing in smaller parts, only having to restart smaller chunks instead of the whole, and then assembling the whole build as one.... that's what made WinRAR useful....
Compression was nice and all too, but self executing part assembly was the standout feature. Again, rendered useless when download managers are built into modern broswers. You can retry a direct download without having to restart the whole file.
Aren't part files useless nowdays? We have better connections and download managers that can restart the download where you left it
Which OS has native rar support?
3 years ago Windows added native support for RAR and 7z formats IIRC
Idk if Linux has any but i doubt it has
Linux does not have native rar support.
WinRAR supports compression and extraction of all types. If you have winRAR, you can make a .7z and a .rar and a .zip and .gzip and .iso and a .tar and a...
In ancient times, 2010, I actually bought Winrar. I wanted to support the developer. Even back then as a child, I found it so cool that someone would give me a very useful tool like this for free, with an infinite free trial. And then I found out about FOSS, after that my mind was blown.
Thank you WinRar for all your years of service. I eventually bought you, because of your value as a product, but to make an arrangement like ours, possible for other companies and group to try. Here's the product, if you like it, give me some money. Fairest deal you'll ever make.
Have you heard of 7zip?
Pretty sure this guy makes a fuck ton off winRar
Yep, it's kind of a racket. The license popup is there to let people know that, hey, technically you have to buy this... but they don't care if Joe Blow buys it, it's free for you, you single-serve mother fucker. A company, though? A company has to buy a copy for every user, and that adds up.
After using winrar for years (after using rar years before that... not sure if it's the same company), I finally bought to copies a few years back. One for myself, one as a Christmas gift to a friend.
rar and winrar are from the same dude (Roshal ARchive, he named it after himself) and his brother handles the business side of things, been this way since the 90s. I THINK they're still the owners of it. But these days, the company is registered in Germany and the legal representatives are actually some Turkish guys. I suspect it's because they founded the company in Germany but live in Russia themselves and perhaps Germany requires legal representatives to be residents? Anyway the company's been the main distributor since like 2002 so at the very least it's still the same company it was 24 years ago.
