I have just been tossed off Reddit. No bad behaviour but Reddit suspects I am not old enough. I have been an adult for quite a few years. Note that age verification is not (yet) required under EU law.

The age verification on Reddit runs through a third party which is associated with Palantir. I will not do this, and there's enough data associated with my account to show I'm an adult.
In general I am extremely sceptical of giving this level of personal information to any third party but especially a company that just cannot be trusted and has proven itself to be a destructive force in the world. I would not recommend anyone to use this, even if it may lose you access to platforms.

On Reddit there have been concerns among the various European subs and its community. I have encouraged various mods to collectively search for a solution. A move to Lemmy seems the obvious one - also just for the sake of supporting European tech and platforms. Alas, none have acted. The best I got was 'good idea, we'll look into it'.

My guess is I am far from the only one to lose access, if not already than soon the same will happen to other users. It may destroy the community that exists there, and my guess is that it's the largest online truly pan-European community.

Anyway, I've signed up for Lemmy / europe.pub a while ago and am eager to use it instead of Reddit. I just hope this place becomes a little more lively.

Just have an 18 year old account! /s

And welcome, it's quite nice here if you block the tankies 😁 !

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 days ago

I find them endlessly entertaining

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

After a while I feel like it's the one same dude behind every tankie 😂

[-] thisislieven@europe.pub 13 points 4 days ago

Thanks.

It is all just bs what they tell you. They claim to look at posts and comments, your email address, domain and general behaviour. This email address is about 20yo, runs over a private domain and my comments over the past few years run deep into the political and I've referenced my career several times.
There's no way you can suspect me a minor based on my available data.

Data mining is where it's at. It's just sad to see the internet of yore slowly getting destroyed by nefarious interests though I am grateful to see communities also fight back.

To be clear, I am pro-child protection but the measures offered won't do that but will do harm towards everyone. I am fairly certain I don't have to explain that here.

Anyone to the left of Hitler.

It's a meaningless word libs throw around to feel smart.

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 days ago

Just block lemmy.ml and lemmy.hexbear and you'll never meet them!

Tankies are pro dictatorships, like pro Soviet Union, or pro China government, trying to maskerade it under "communism". A bit like MAGA but with other beliefs.

[-] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml -2 points 4 days ago

i love how every single person has their own different definition for "tankie" xD

almost like it means nothing at this point like the word "woke"

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com -2 points 3 days ago

Oh no no no no you aint gonna water that one down.

Here's the wikipedia definition

Or short:

Tankie is a pejorative label generally applied to authoritarian communists, especially those who support or defend acts of repression by such regimes, their allies, or deny the occurrence of the events thereof.

Ah yes. Wikipedia.

Baffled eh.

[-] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 days ago

not really, i just can't say any more because this instance's rules are vague as fuck and i'd like to stay a part of this buyfromeu community instead of getting yeeted from the instance for having different opinions

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago

Oh, lying?

Yeah you people are really good at subverting the truth.

[-] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

idk how you make me out to be a liar with 0 evidence

"you people". you know you want to call me a tankie for having different opinions from you. just say it.

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 2 days ago

You just told me you lie to not be kicked out, loser.

Blocked

[-] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

no, i said that i will refrain from commenting on wikipedia's reliability so that i wont accidentally break any rules.

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip -2 points 3 days ago

You dear sir

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

More will trickle in as these tech companies go more and more mask off. Just as a heads up, I have zero doubt Reddit has shared any and all user data with palantir. If you leave, delete your information first. Don't stay.

[-] thisislieven@europe.pub 1 points 3 days ago

Not saying that isn't the case but do you have any sources that show Palantir is directly involved?

I don't know where you are in the world but in the EU this should not be legal without explicit consent. Of course that may matter little but in theory there are laws against this.

It's amazing how easily the corpo social media sites outright supported, and in Meta's case, lobbied for this surveillance overreach.

They lick the boot that's on their face.

[-] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 13 points 4 days ago

Age verification is extremely valuable to social media platforms: it lets them charge more for ad impressions via better ad targeting.

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

Corporations have historically always been in bed with fascism. It didn't end well for them then and it won't end well for them now.

[-] thisislieven@europe.pub 9 points 4 days ago

It's an easy way for them to make even more money. Meta is just outright evil. I never joined Whatsapp or Instagram, no matter how annoyed it makes the people around me, and I was on FB for a brief while because of a specific community but the platform is just toxic even if you very selectively engage with it. And this was about a decade ago, it's only gotten worse since.

I am just angry with our European leaders who are massively dropping the ball and now even venture into anti-democratic tricks to push things through that have been defeated multiple times already.

[-] pnwpixel@programming.dev 2 points 3 days ago

From across the pond, I'm sorry you're going through that. I try to keep up on how this is panning out in Europe as a whole, but I'm never really sure what news sources are worth trusting.

[-] thisislieven@europe.pub 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Thanks, though depending on where you are across the pond not sure if there's reason to be jealous. But yes, the EU is going through it at the moment and not sure where things will land eventually.

There are several decent sources but for mainstream media I would recommend the EU section of the Brussels Times and the EU Observer. Dave Keating is one of the best independent journalists who's not afraid to call things out for what they are. France24 is pretty decent too and free.

[-] pnwpixel@programming.dev 2 points 3 days ago

Stateside. Unfortunately.

Added these to my rss list, thank you for that. I hope we all get through this era of stupidity and malice.

[-] Labotomized@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

I feel like there are a lot less funny comments on memes but genuine questions get a lot of engagement. I’ve been here for a few years and it’s nice. Stick with it you’ll find communities you enjoy and get in the habit of blocking communities you don’t and it’ll be great!

[-] thisislieven@europe.pub 2 points 4 days ago

I won't deny the memes can be fun and engaging in their own way. I've seen posts beginning with a meme developing into something much more meaningful. Generally though I am a political animal through and through and spend a lot of time 'observing society'. It feels like Lemmy can be a nice fit for me.

It's my plan to stick around and be an active member, need to find my footing a bit but I am given a welcome I didn't expect which is encouraging.

So far I only read some reports of this happening but fortunately have not experienced it yet. Somebody said it happens when you try to access NSFW content. I will never give my ID to Persona. The moment I get a request for that I'm off Reddit for good.

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

Be off Reddit now because that's piece of shit Nazi spez is already sharing your entire account contents with palantir. The things they can discern from your comments are scary. Delete them and get off the platform.

[-] thisislieven@europe.pub 2 points 4 days ago

Well, the purge seems to be happening. It was sort of weird because I was verified and then I wasn't and then I was and then I wasn't. But until this afternoon I could at least access the non-NSFW part of Reddit, even this morning without issue. Suddenly I can't even access (or delete) my own profile.

My biggest concern is that community falling apart.

But indeed, in general I am wary of these third party providers but Personal especially. It's not going to happen. As such, the end of Reddit for me. I am a little sad about it but glad I have options of reaching the few people important to me otherwise.

In the end it's probably for the best but I'd like to have made that decision myself.

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago

Wait you can't delete it!?

[-] thisislieven@europe.pub 1 points 3 days ago

Nope. When I go to the site or open the app I am first forced to verify my age and when I click the button to enter my birth date it sends me to Persona instead. It's beyond aggressive and I am fairly certain also illegal under EU law.

There's a right to delete your data and profile (and have it 'forgotten').

When I suddenly had no access I contacted their customer service asking them to check my stuff, recognise I am an adult and reinstate me. Within a few minutes I got a mail that I had to either verify or sod it. When I replied to that that I should at least have access to my own data/profile they didn't respond. I'll give it a few days but this is not something I will just accept.

I'm so over having to fight with companies for their refusal to comply with the law or, you know, just exercising basic decency.
