In the 90s, you'd want to get up at 6am on a Saturday so you could see the best cartoons.

hosted by Captain Kangaroo himself

So true I miss that. Of course I was always a heavy sleeper so I missed most of the early early ones.

[-] boaratio@lemmy.world 1 points 38 minutes ago

I'd set our VCR on a timer so that I wouldn't miss Gamepro TV.

Back in the 1980s a pack of gum could snap on your finger like a mousetrap.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 10 hours ago

Or turn your mouth black. Or burn like hellfire.

[-] Fizz@lemmy.nz 5 points 19 hours ago

In 2000s a pack of gum could electrocute you.

[-] sol6_vi@lemmy.makearmy.io 11 points 1 day ago

Believe it or not this is true.

My community college friend once offered me a snake in a can, but when I opened it, it just contained nuts.

[-] atomicorange@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

I was delighted when he showed me Annieโ€™s Boobs, but in a totally different way than I was expecting.

[-] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

You might like the TV show, Community, then. I know I do.

[-] man_wtfhappenedtoyou@lemmy.world 4 points 16 hours ago

Oh was this a Community reference I missed? Damn it.

[-] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

Yeah, Season 1, Episode 20: https://subslikescript.com/series/Community-1439629/season-1/episode-20-The_Science_of_Illusion

That's okay. That's what I love about the show. It's fun to just watch, but there's a lot of extra content in the details. I've watched every episode several times, at least once with headphones, subtitles and my full attention, and there's no way I can remember every single reference. As long as you don't forget Troy and Abed in the Morning, you're good.

[-] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 4 points 14 hours ago

Minor Community spoiler?Troy named a capuchin monkey "Annie's Boobs."

[-] davidgro@lemmy.world 54 points 1 day ago

I've always felt that was more like the 70s.

[-] Mostly_Gristle@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

I wasn't alive in the 70s, but I remember seeing them a bunch when I was a kid in the 80s. A lot of the time they were in cans labeled "peanut brittle," which I always thought was weird because to this day I have never once seen actual peanut brittle packaged in a can.

[-] diabetic_porcupine@lemmy.world 4 points 23 hours ago

Playing on your ignoranceโ€ฆ everybody has to learn it for themselves one dayโ€ฆ PEANUT ๐Ÿ‘ BRITTLE ๐Ÿ‘ DOES ๐Ÿ‘ NOT ๐Ÿ‘ COME ๐Ÿ‘ IN ๐Ÿ‘ A ๐Ÿ‘ CAN ๐Ÿ‘

It wasn't the 90's.

I lived through the 90's and never once actually saw one of these. They were always in cartoons, though.

[-] protist@retrofed.com 9 points 1 day ago

I lived through the 90s and definitely saw these and had one during the 90s

[-] VinegarChunks@lemmus.org 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I lived through the 90s, frequently saw snakes jump out of cans of peanut brittle.

But I basically never saw any real cans of peanut brittle.

[-] lectricleopard@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I know I found them at my grand parents house, with my dad's sruff from the 70s. But the last time I saw one was then, in the 90s. Everyone probably threw them out when they got discovered that way with old stuff.

[-] ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

But at least you could still afford them in the 90s, and even have the money to electively buy snack sized cans of nuts in the first place.

[-] BromSwolligans@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago

Can somebody remind me what this content creator / series name is? There's one I want to dig up on YouTube but I can't remember what to search.

[-] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

[-] Carrot@lemmy.today 9 points 1 day ago

I've still got the snake in a can that my grandparents had when I was a child, it's a fun prank

[-] inari@piefed.zip 5 points 1 day ago

Is this some Australian joke?

[-] comador@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago

'can of snakes' is an old physical prank consisting of a spring loaded snake inside a can disguised as peanuts or candy.

[-] inari@piefed.zip 8 points 1 day ago
[-] Snapz@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

THAT'S not an Australian joke... THIS is an Australian joke!

[-] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago
