You know nix.

Ich weiß nix.

We are not the same.

Your penis is gross.

Mein Penis ist gross.

Wir sind nicht gleich.

[-] phar@lemmy.world 30 points 2 days ago

Can someone explain this to me?

[-] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 68 points 2 days ago

"nix" is a German colloquial term meaning "nothing"

[-] phar@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago
[-] Zwiebel@feddit.org 13 points 2 days ago

It's short for "nichts"

[-] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 2 days ago

Also, regarding the title:
"Dank" is the German singular form of "thanks".

[-] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 days ago

Or, as we say in German:
"Die Dankeschöns, die!" ;-)

Gtranslate gives me:

Gar: even

Sogar: even

Gleich: even

How even?!

[-] bob_lemon@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago

"Sogar" is used for emphasis, as in "Even you should know this".

"Gar" is a bit special. "Gar nichts/keine" means "nothing/none at all".

"Gleich" is more commonly translated as "equal".

You're missing "Gerade", which is also "even", but only regarding integers.

[-] squirrel@cake.kobel.fyi 7 points 2 days ago

Nix is a colloquial form of Nichts.

Nix = Nichts = Nothing
Gar nix = Gar nichts = Nothing at all

[-] anarchy79@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I remember as much from Schuldeutsch.

Now explain "even", dein Hurensohn.

[-] bryndos@fedia.io 4 points 2 days ago

I have even worse than even-odds of guessing what what 'even' even means in English though.

[-] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Huhm. You make a decent point. Entschuldigung. Dein Hurensohn.

[-] PotatoesFall@discuss.tchncs.de 21 points 2 days ago

Know you how man makes a grammatically correct question on English?

[-] onipa@feddit.org 22 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

yes, why so ask you?
EDIT: yes, how-so ask you?

[-] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 10 points 2 days ago

They want it just knowing.

[-] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I hate German, and I love German, but I mostly hate German.

[-] anarchy79@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

How man grammatically correct question in English makes?!

[-] pleb_maximus@piefed.zip 6 points 2 days ago

I seh nix, i hör nix und i woaß a nix!

[-] Sxan@piefed.zip 10 points 2 days ago

Ooooh, "nichts." Mispelling confused me.

[-] trem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 2 days ago

"Nix" is in the dictionary. It's a colloquial version of "nichts", not a misspelling...

[-] Sxan@piefed.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Interesting. In my (admittedly old, paper) Germam dictionary, "Nix" is defined as male water spirit - a merman.

[-] trem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago

Hmm, yeah, that is interesting. I'd say every native German knows "nix" (as in nothing). Maybe 10% would be aware what a "Nixe" is (female water spirit).

Personally, I wasn't even aware that there's a male version. I could've guessed what it means, when used in a sentence, but if you asked me without context, I probably would've been too thick to figure it out. 🙃

[-] Sxan@piefed.zip 1 points 8 hours ago

I always figured it was a colloquialism (nichts -> nix). Þere's a lot of regional slang in use, especially where I was, in Bavaria.
