They don't have a button on the side that makes the whole thing twang, like old CRTs?

Oh man, I heard the degaussing noise when I read this comment

They should

Had to do this when the air temp was ~10°c. Luckily we were able to do it in Norfolk, which meant the water was above freezing.

Those cables are heavy as fuck and we had to wrap the ship by hand.

How do you pass the cable underneath the ship? Also do you need a special base or can it be done anywhere?

Divers, barges, winches, people. It takes days, it takes up a bit of space and you need specialized equipment and space for safety.

The only places I know it's done have a shipyard for support. And I haven't heard of civilian ships doing this either.

Damn, sounds like an expensive affair

Yeah, demagnetization, riiight. I've seen The Final Countdown and have some idea what's really going on here.

They are obviously building a stargate

Ok, ship degaussing is a super interesting thing I've never heard of.

[-] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 month ago

Yes! I only learnt about it because I happen to be on holiday by a ship demagnetizing station

The one near me looks a bit less sexy

This is because sailors with static hair look very silly.
