Man, I don't like this.

I checked out the go fund me and while it's never stated explicitly, one might come to the conclusion that she was homeless.

I also didn't like the vibe of the go fun me.

Tried to find out who her boyfriend was and there was almost nothing about him online, which isn't necessarily a red flag.

I just can't help but be a cynic when it comes to former child stars being in precarious situations and living in LA. My assumption is always that whomever finds them and attaches themselves to them isn't going to be a good person. Maybe I'm being judgy. I dunno. At first I didn't want to say anything, because it could just be bs and maybe they had a happy life in a safe home and they just like wearing beanies and layers of clothes for fun. Maybe it's totally normal for your boyfriend to air out your trauma in a fundraiser and post several pictures where he is the focus of the image and not you while he asks for money for your final days. Maybe I'm just being a judgy bitch.

And then I found a couple of articles talking about how her family and friends have been looking for her since 2017 and there's a PI trying to track her down on fucking Skid Row of all places and last she was spotted she was skin and bones and seemed exhausted.

She has been in trouble with the law with drug possession and joyriding from what I could understand and according to her old manager she was homeless and her boyfriend is in his opinion an opportunist.

Who is right? Who is wrong? Her boyfriend frames himself as a white knight in the go fund me. Maybe he is. Maybe all my alarm bells in my head is just me being judgy af. Maybe all these articles are fiction on tabloid sites. I don't know. I just know that there is something not right about this situation.

At the end of the day, it's tragic no matter what is true. The picture I'm getting of Chase's last years is one of homelessness, substance abuse and extreme psychological suffering.

As some people also mentioned in this thread, she was preyed upon by Diddy and Ashton Kutcher, which I can only imagine what they did to her psyche and sense of self.

I lean towards believing these tabloid sites, mostly because it is eerily common for former child actors to end up on the street when Hollywood is done sucking their youth and innocence from them, but make up your own minds.

Rest in peace, Daveigh Chase. You were wronged and failed by the adults who were supposed to protect you.

She died of complications from meningitis and sepsis in case you didn't read the article. She was hospitalized from malnutrition, but it wasn't what killed her.

[-] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 44 points 16 hours ago

"hospitalised earlier this month for malnutrition"?!? Jfc how long did she suffer before someone thought to get her to a hospital??

[-] ironycanal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 4 hours ago

You've never advocated for homeless populations, or you wouldn't ask that.

[-] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 1 points 39 minutes ago

No i haven't but she wasn't homeless or did she at one point live on the street?

[-] kamenlady@lemmy.world 41 points 16 hours ago

After appearing in Thomas Dekker’s 2016 horror film Jack Goes Home, Chase largely withdrew from acting. In the GoFundMe page, Hernandez refers to various difficulties encountered by the actor, including bullying and a falling out with her family. Chase, he writes, “struggled to find safety and happiness in downtown LA” but that the two “found moments of happiness and hope” until her recent health issues. According to TMZ, Chase was taken to a hospital earlier this month for malnutrition.

It os entirely possible that her "boyfriend" is a scam artist trying to get money out of her death. SAG has her funeral expenses covered actually. And her family has said that they've been trying to find her for a pretty long time. Unknown if there was issues between them and her but there are a lot of unknowns.

But, don't donate to his GoFundMe. Her final expenses are fully covered by the actors union.

Also found out she was "acquainted" with Diddy, jfc she had a shit life.

Jesus fucking christ, what a horrible way to go at such a young age. I loved her voice not only as Lilo but ~~Shihiro~~ Chihiro in Spirited Away. God damn, she'll be missed.

[-] tiramichu@sh.itjust.works 7 points 13 hours ago

*Chihiro

I never watched the English dub of Spirited Away because In not a dub person (I didn't know it was even her in it!) but I loved Chase's performance in Lilo and Stitch and that makes me want to check it out after the fact.

From my perspective Spirited Away was one of the movies that really solidified anime as "a thing" in the west, and that's kinda huge.

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 44 minutes ago

Ghibli films are the only foreign language films that I watch dubbed, because the English voice casts are incredible

[-] sharkweek@sopuli.xyz 7 points 10 hours ago

Studio Ghibli films are generally better with the English dubs - they put serious effort in, and it shows.

In Spirited Away the English dub is far better than the original IMO.

Outside of Ghibli, I avoid English dubs.

[-] tiramichu@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 hours ago

Ghibli dubs are undoubtedly the best in the business and have some serious talent.

But I still like the subs more. That's just preference I suppose.

TBF, Miramax fucked the Western release of Nausicaa, way back when, so...

[-] tiramichu@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 hours ago

A blessing in disguise, perhaps.

If the English release of Nausicaa had been done well, Ghibli may have continued allowing foreign distributors to make major changes to their movies under the remit of "internationalisation"

But they screwed it up, which lead directly to the now-famous "no edits" policy.

In the long-term I think that fuck-up really helped Ghibli to cement their reputation in the west for making good stuff.

[-] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

I suppose my point is more that I've reservations with believing Miramax simply made a series of oopsies (still took the money, though), vs the far more likely: their parent co (Disney) internationally burned its release.

Hell, it was so slack-ass, so devoid of effort, it screams "slap in the face". Never mind that it's indefensibly illegal —Disney no doubt was betting they'd skate at worst, 'cuz: Murica.

Impressive, from an academic point that, to this day, so few've seen the insane box art for that "fuck you" robbery Disney pulled (by proxy), much less are even aware of this event at all.

Whomever they paid to bury it deeper than fish shit really took it to the enth. 🧏🏽‍♂️

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 42 minutes ago* (last edited 42 minutes ago)

I'm not familiar with this situation, what did Miramax change about the English release of Nausicaa?

[-] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 4 points 11 hours ago

Dude wtf didn't Kyle Busch just die of sepsis at 41?

What's up with relatively young famous people suddenly dying of sepsis??

[-] ironycanal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 hours ago

Sepsis is really easy to die from. Fame is no protection!

[-] gibmiser@lemmy.world 19 points 16 hours ago

Malnutrition... sounds like some form of mental health or abuse to me.

[-] Nangijala@feddit.dk 2 points 4 hours ago

It all begins to make sense when you find out that she was homeless and addicted to drugs on Skid Row for a decade :( seems like she was desperate to just forget everything. :(
