my favorite bit is that since the prices have been kept artificially low it's not profitable for anybody to increase extraction despite the looming shortage

    Even if not, increased prices would lead to at least some demand destruction in the short term and midterm they could have some level of reduction of dependence on fossil fuels, even if just a small amount, but that's probably the thing they're most afraid of happening in the mid-long term. So much they'd play chicken with a worldwide energy crisis in hopes something will happen to bail them out.
