God I wish the IP didn't belong to EA. It has so much potential, I always wanted Alice 3 to be a Soulslike personally but I know American McGee himself had some ideas already for Alice: Asylum to be the next installment. Shame EA doesn't give two fucks about the franchise.

That would definitely keep me from buying it; I can't stand those sorts of games. I did like the first two, though, and still have the CD for the first one kicking around.

Same. Also the terms "soulslike" and "roguelike".

[-] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 1 points 1 month ago

May I ask what terms you would prefer for these genres?

Calling American McGee "Alice creator" with no additional context is a bit absurd.

[-] cobysev@lemmy.world 25 points 1 month ago

I mean, his game is called "American McGee's Alice." Saying "American McGee's Alice creator, American McGee" is a bit wordy and repetitive.

I know I get that, its just that Alice is both the name of the game and the name of the character, one of which he created and the other he didn't. There's not a great way to phrase it, but it makes it sound like he created the character Alice, which he did not.

She is named after and inspired by the Alice of Lewis Carrol's books, but she's a very different take on her. He created this version of her.

As far as title artistic licences go this case is by far on the good side in today's age - it's not even:

American Valves just blasted Steam & changed history forever, here is why if you don't click on this article an Alice will get murdered

That's some creative thinking and writing style. I wouldn't mind if that is a one off title, and take it with some humor. But I get what you are saying (the title is not clickbait).

You really have nothing else going on in your head?

Remember what the dormouse said

Yes legally that is the full title, but in the actual logo art it's a very small "American McGee's" and a big "Alice". Kind of like all the "Sid Meier's" games. They're named like that because they didn't want to risk trademark problems with simple names.

American McGee's Alice creator American McGee

Also sounds funny

[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 month ago

The article contains all the context that is needed. You can't have a full blown article as a title.

In an alternate reality, people played Sid Meier’s Alice and American McGee’s Civilization

A few bits of dialogue for those who haven't played the Alice games:
