Good, maybe the masses will finally abandon that garbage.

I'm so sick of being directed to a fucking Discord server when I'm looking for a projects forums, especially when researching a specific problem.

Add on their forced arbitration terms and I'd rather abandon projects/creators that use discord vs support them. I'm not giving up my legal rights just to ask a common question that I should be able to find with a google search. (but can't because all the answers are on discord instead of a public forum)

Same, but I'm not sure what Discord is doing will help much, because it only affects server that are classified as "age restricted" (mature content), if they're not, no verification will be required, for now at least.

Is that known already? Which servers are deemed appropriate?

It is known since this age verification has existed for a while now in some regions, it's only now rolling out globally.

The server owner is the one that marks a server or specific channels as NSFW.

So if you don't send/visw anything NSFW this won't impact you.

Definitely not doing that. Already only use Discord because my friend circle can't be arsed to use anything else for group phonecalls. Our private channel is not going to disappear anyway, but it's quite probable that we won't be able to link/upload media as freely as before - not that we were sharing any sexual content, but "sensitive content" could be literally anything that US authoritarians don't like, plus content that is just misidentified.

I've got that with whatsapp. Never used discord, it's more of a gamers thing. But my friends refuse to switch to signal. Even my parents have switched to signal.

[-] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 3 points 3 months ago

Same! How the hell did most of my family switch to Signal, yet my friends and younger brother stick with shit like Discord, WhatsApp and Telegram??

Matrix is actual dog shit in my experience (and in the experience of various IT guys I know).

[-] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 months ago

Care to expound for us less privileged?

[-] SalamenceFury@piefed.social 8 points 3 months ago

Not only it's unstable, but a friend of mine who dabbles with it also vouched for it being extremely unstable, and also it has a massive CSAM bot problem. A lot of IRC channels had to shut down their Matrix bridges cause they kept getting spammed with that shit. To that guy IRC is actually more user friendly.

Thanks, that's informative! 🤘🏻

Discord just had a breach of that ID data. Discord is going to lose a lot of users this way.

[-] Astertheprince@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 months ago

This will also do little to stop criminals or underage users because as much as people have artificially avoided the topic of it, fake IDs are still a thing.

[-] atrielienz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

We both know that this isn't about stopping criminals or underaged users. That's just a pretext to conveniently use as cover for their real reason which is surveillance.
