Cig points have been a thing for a loooong time now, I think as far back as the late 80's? My dad had a billion or so marlboro points he saved up and bought a kayak with. I think most people just use them for a discount on their next pack rather than branded merch.
There was a point I collected all my friends Camel bucks and was going to get I think a pool table.

God I remember that when I was little. There was a brochure in the soda aisle with the stuff you could get and I was all "Wow we can get a plane!"
