Oh hi!
Sorry I didn't see this until now. I really wish there was a way to make Lemmy give you a notification when there's a new post in a specific community. (And, I guess there is: a bot. But anyway.) I'll make a point to check this community more often in the future.
Schizoid Angst. I honestly haven't watched all that many of his videos. Though ironically, I was watching one at the time I discovered your post just a few minutes ago. It's not that I don't get value out of them. I do. And I do have the intention to watch more of his stuff. I just... feel like if I'm going to watch his stuff, I should watch from "the beginning". I know it's irrational, but yeah. Plus it's kindof boring compared to other content I could watch.
I will say his interviews with Elinor Greenberg are fantastic. Absolutely worth watching.
I'm on the Discord, and I think that's definitely worthwhile for a whole lot of reasons. It's a resource I use a lot more than his videos and I do think I get a lot of value out of it. Particularly:
- Resources. There are so many good resources linked there. Books (lots of free ones in digital/e-book form), websites, free online tests for schizoidness (there are researchers there who are building such tests based on feedback from the community), etc. I've read a lot on SzPD, mostly based on recommendations from the Discord.
- Commiseration/community. Just being able to put a label on why I am the way I am and hear about others' similar struggles is helpful.
- Insights. Just hearing about others' struggles/breakthroughs and seeing the advice folks give will give you more insight.
- Support. It's nice to be able to jump in there and ask advice directly. Or just vent.
- If you haven't tried therapy, motivation and concrete reasons to try therapy. (This is one I need. I have yet to try therapy.)
- If you're in therapy, techniques and advice for getting the most out of therapy.
- Heck, even things like the music recommendations and memes are nice.
- Oh, the fact that it doesn't require a diagnosis to join is a big plus, I think.
- And it does sometimes give me more motivation to watch more of Schizoid Angst's videos, which I think is, in general, good for me.
Downsides, just to be comprehensive:
- Occasionally, there's a right-wing nutjob to contend with. Over all, the Discord's politics are a little right-er than I'd like. Far from "right-wing", and the Koolaided MAGA nuts are rare. But it's a thing to note.
- I find myself getting a little too involved socially there sometimes and getting overwhelmed and withdrawing. That said, the Discord's rules are set up to mitigate that as well as can possibly be done, I think. It's not a fault of the Discord. More of that in-and-out pattern that is kindof inherent to schizoids.
- Getting access to the main parts of the Discord is a bit of a pain that I procrastinated on for a good while. Well worth it IMO, though.
Hopefully that gives you the answers you're looking for.
