A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. A showerthought should offer a unique perspective on an ordinary part of life.

My brain would always just give me the shape I need to clear the line

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Why is it always squares and straight lines?!

On long car rides, I would play mental Mario with the telephone poles and houses.

I can certainly play the Tetris theme in my head!

Aphantasia gang takes offense to this

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I did it often when I was really into it. I had Tetris dreams, it honestly was cool.

This phenomenon is literally called the tetris effect haha

Also, the title of one of the best Tetris games released ever. The visual and musical artistry in that game is astounding.

Unless you have aphantasia. People with aphantasia are unable to mentally visualize. I close my eyes and it's just blackness all the time.

Aphantasia is very intriguing for me. Everytime I try to think about it, I just can't picture it.

I can't visualize a tetris block, much less a whole tetris game. I think I could draw all the tetris blocks if I tried so the information is there, just not stored as jpg. More like a zipped text file.

Yeah I have the same thing. I can sort of visualize the concept, like foggy still images of tetris games I've played but I cannot imagine a game setup where a piece would fall and complete a line. That is too specific. I can just do like general concepts, not specifics.

So how you for ex, do you orient yourself in space? I visualize a map, and then position myself accordingly

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Maps in my head are useless. I get lost everywhere. When I went to university I walked so much more than I had to because of orientation issues. I get lost so easily. Even when playing games, if there is no map I just draw one myself because I have 0 reliability on my orientation skills. GPS was such a life saver for me. I rely waaay too much on it. For when I do not have the tools (GPS, map or other) I use visual cues in the background such as tall buildings, mountains or the sun's position. I don't really think about it since I've been doing this since I can remember but I always feel amazed at how others around me can just know which direction to start walking after coming out of a door. Eventually I do memorize it but it takes a while.

My favorite tetris fact is that it may help with PTSD flashbacks. Link for the curious.

Since learning about this, I have decided to keep the game installed on my phone in case something wild happens (I'm thinking after witnessing an accident or something). It is sort of comforting to have a scientifically backed up mental strategy that is easily accessible, even if it's not a lot. I gather that tetris keeps the part of your brain responsible for looping images occupied with, well, tetris.

Horizontal I block all the way to the left... horizontal I block next to the previous one... square block on the right.

horizontal I block on the left and horizontal I block next to that.

voila, all clear. Now repeat.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

i only get squares, it's super easy

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Mine are always the shape of cheese doodles and I lose really quickly.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

I'm not very good, I forgot to clear a line I filled.

In boring meetings, I play Arkanoid with things around me.
