I saw this post and wanted to ask the opposite. What are some items that really aren't worth paying the expensive version for? Preferably more extreme or unexpected examples.

Depends on altitude really. If you're higher up it's freezing meltwater, which might have a non-zero chance of containing disease carriers but it's probably extremely unlikely.
