To be fair, they did get some pretty decent damage in on their surprise round. They just didn't get many more chances.
The next time you end up taking a long rest you're just gonna find yourself falling into a sinkhole and landing in the middle of the fucking underdark.
That sounds like a good way for the PCs to become rulers of the underdark.
