I was kind of entertained by the mail advertisements being for the city/county I voted in last election, even though they obviously have my current address which is far away from that location. But I just looked at my mail-in ballot and it is for the municipality I lived in 2 years ago rather than my current residence, which they obviously have since I received the ballot in the mail. This feels like entrapment.

Oh obvious followup, I had to renew my driver's license a year ago with my current address and that included an update to my voter registration since that is just checking a box when renewing any paperwork with the DMV.

Edit: I just remembered that I moved to my current address before the 2024 election and I got the correct ballot in 2024. So this is even weirder than I thought.

  • i still get a ballot to vote in a place i haven't lived in nearly 20 years. i have lived in 3 different states (probably 7 different districts) since then and always updated my registration. some states figure it out and communicate, others are absurd.

    its jank city.

Sometimes your old location doesn't get the message that you changed registrations. There are legit reasons to live somewhere else but still be registered in your old location (temporary relocation, being a student, etc) so changing addresses doesn't necessarily mean you aren't a valid voter. Meanwhile your new location registers you just fine because you proved residency there. The new location is supposed to notify the old location but, in my experience, it's hit or miss.

You should vote in your new location and destroy the ballot for the old location. It's not a crime unless you vote in both. You will naturally fall off the voter roll for your old location after a set time of missing votes. You can also manually notify them but I think most people don't. I did this once and they acted like it was unusual.
