Hi guys

I'm doing my best to spread the word that this site AO3.life has scraped lots of fics from AO3 and is selling them for profit.

I removed the site link for ao3.life as it's gone now!

I have found at least 5 of mine there and so have my friends.

What can we do to stop them, I don't know? They say we can request our fics to be taken down but I think that would compromise our anonymity.

Update: I found this where someone reported the site and got a reply, so hopefully it is helpful: https://www.threads.com/@k.kinley24/post/DfPo6h2Gqsh/media?xmt=AQG0CjOMyS8v8V0npLV2WEm5QcRdhQLLdD22v4z8BXF-ECKorQjw1UbF_h4GqArnC9oB2IA

You cannot. Anything that is free can be taken and sold by a shady person. There used to be Linux disks you can buy in a store.

Edit: also they got a link for this on their page. Really up to you. What is wrong with that site?

I'm under the impression don't really understand the culture or history of obtaining Linux. Yes, anybody can sell a disk with Linux on it. You can also download that same software for free. The data transfer rates back in the day meant that getting a physical disk was the quickest way to get 500Mb of packages etc. Plus not everybody wants to bootstrap from a tarball and chroot into a system to finish installing from files on their current OS. Flash drives and CD burners were not common yet. Physical media were a way to spread Linux, not make a quick buck off it. There was nothing shady about it.

The shady thing was people not realizing that you could also just download it burn it yourself due to the cover image. And even back then 10 Bucks or so were quite a lot. They never were a good deal.

The shady thing was people interested in Linux that were ignorant of its licensing? Because of a cover image?

56k modems weren't even commonplace until the late 90s. Even if you could guarantee full download speeds then, you're looking at over two days for an ISO while your phone line would be occupied. And not everybody had a CD burner. If you value your time and disk space, it was worth it.

Go find something else to be angry at for no reason.
