It really depends on the properties of the water where you live. I have lived places that needed replacing every 2 years and I have lived places where it was still fine after 20 years. You’ll know when it’s time to swap it, it will look like shit.

If your hot water starts to smell like sulphur, that can also be a sign. Especially if it's worse when you don't run it for a day or two.
