The amount of traffic being generated by devices that have no consumer-friendly reason to do so is appalling. I don't really trust devices like chromecast and Apple TV anymore, and have stopped using them. Instead, I built a Pi specifically for that purpose. It's worked great for services like Netflix and Crunchyroll; sometimes YouTube is slow and clunky, which tells me that there's a lot more going on in the background than just delivering videos, but overall I'm happy with it. Plus I can use it for a lot more than just streaming.
