Meanwhile, the xbox controller usb dongle still hasn't received support.

I ended up just giving up on Xbox controllers completely, they also have a stick drift problem that Microsoft refuses to fix. Switched to 8bitdo and haven't looked back. Everything works straight out of the box on Linux and no stick drift.

I'm using an 8bit ultimate 2c. For the price (think I paid 25 for it) it ca't be beat.

However, I have two xbox controllers. One is about 6 years old and has bt but the other one is the older version that only worked with the dongle. Thankfully neither has stick drift. That's not a "Microsoft" problem though, it's simoly because the type of stick they use wears out. The steam deck has the same issue. If you want to fix it, you can just replace them with TMR or Hall Effect sticks.

Regardless of that, it's a fact that they're most likely the most popular pc controller, and there already is a way to use them on steam with the dongle. But the driver has to be reinstalled every single time you update. SteamOS has a ticket ablut this going back years and years but they refuse to add support.

EDIT: You don't need tl constantly reinstall the driver, there's a decky plugin to add support for the dongle. Link.

I'm sure if you get that in as a stable mainline kernel module, they'll turn it on.

As someone who tried to get the out of tree drivers to work reliably for years, good luck.

That's simply false. The driver already exists, and they still refuse to add support. There's a ticket about it on the SteamOS github page if you don't believe me. Link.

EDIT: There's a decky plugin for those (like me) tired of waiting. Link.

    That’s simply false.

Lol, which part? The part where I said they would turn it on if it was in the mainline kernel?

ideally, this package should gain mainline support in Arch before being evaluated for downstream inclusion in SteamOS 3.0.

Or the part where I said if it was stable? Or where I explicitly acknowledged the out of tree driver that's a PITA?

The main detail here to answer is if the package has widespread testing and support over a long term, there's a higher chance that a mainline package will present minimal to no additional overhead to maintain by SteamOS devs compared to an AUR package.

I guess thanks for doing the leg work on proving me right?
