Would you like a lump of unsalted, uunflavored starch? No? What if we slice it open and dump in a lot of heavy flavor ingredients and spices? That way you can overwhelm your taste buds in the first few forkfuls, and the remaining unflavored mass will taste even blander by comparison!

Who invented this and what did they have against dicing the potato in appropriately sized chunks to absorb and distribute the flavor?

I mean it's kind of the whole reason all food isn't just palatable nutrient mush. A good baked potato has a good distribution of texture and flavor. A crispy, salty skin, buttery, creamy flesh, a green pop of scallions, crunchy bacon bits and gooey cheese. You are supposed to kind of mash the toppings together a bit with the tater flesh.

I rarely bother because it's a lot of work, but an actual crispy, loaded baked potato is an S tier food.
