The supreme court did it so no Dem ever had to show morals or leadership. The Dems "suddenly seeing the light" and mainstream Dems suddenly being pro gay rights wasn't after the polling said it was "viable" but being anti-gay rights would lose them votes even again Republicans because they would alienate their own base.
