It would be kind of awesome if the scalpers paid the ridiculous sticker price for these, and then nobody bought them from the scalpers because nobody actually wants the goddamn thing.

That's what will happen. But it's likely they will also think 2k for a digital brick might not be the best thing to do with how expensive everything is.
