Me and my buddy were recently talking about why conservatives are always voting against theirs best interests and we kept circling back to the same old responses we've heard for years. It just wasn't satisfying.

We started pivoting our discussion. As dumb as they are politically, we are still neighbors. We all are struggling to get by and live happy lives. So why do they feel so strongly about limited government and deregulation? Don't they see that these things are hurting them just as much as it does everyone else?

And then we thought, what if they know all this deregulation and limited government do not help them out. In a country that rewards hyper individualism, conservatives see social safety nets as a way to let anyone get ahead.

Even ahead of themselves.

Someone else could become a billionaire if they can be lifted up by social welfare. These people idolized the ultra wealthy, want to be just like them and be rich too. If we help lift up everyone, that means their neighbors are just as close to reaching that dream as the themselves. And that just can't be allow.

In our US culture, it's all about getting to top and winning. Socialism isn't winning it's always a tie.

As much as laws and amendments can force change, I will always believe that we need to shift how our culture thinks about our neighbors. We need to relearn empathy in this country and when we stop worrying about "me me me", everyone will actually start agreeing that socialism deserves a seat at the table.
