It wasn't all that long ago, this was the pitch for a capitalist world; everyone is too economically interdependent to realistically go to war with each other.

Obviously in practice, its a lot more messy than that. Great powers are pretty much free to make war on whatever small countries they like. But we may not see any of them take a total war footing in our lifetimes. Peer to peer conflict is self destruction. The columnists and news pundits and other such clergy, the people who exist to find justifications for whatever rich powerful people were gonna do anyway, they may not like it -- but this is the world they argued for.
