"Middle of the road" was never how politics worked, it's how you get hit by both directions of traffic.

You win by galvanizing your base, normalizing your opinions, and appearing successful.

People don't vote based on a calculation of ideological proximity (and a plurality of people are ideologically incoherent), they vote based on pathos.
