In a system described as “oppressive and dystopian” by a whistleblower, Co-op Legal Services is using AI models to record, analyse and award a percentage score for interactions between agents and customers seeking advice about probate, wills and estates.

The Co-op, which operates supermarkets, undertakers, insurance and legal services companies, said it did not recognise the criticism and said its probate advisers were highly engaged. It said it supported colleagues with AI, which is a “key aspect of our quality assurance processes” and helps ensure “our clients consistently receive empathetic expert guidance”.

Well it's quite simple. Walk into any Co-Op service that isn't one of their Supermarkets, press record on a device and ask them if they are using AI and can they refrain from using it throughout any part of the services you wish you employ.

If they can't guarantee it, walk out. If they say they will not, you have it verbally from a member of their staff.

Also check that in the eventuality that your data does end up being used by AI, you want the right to have an independent outside legal team verify that all data and any tangential data created from the improperly inputted original data must be completely removed.

It'll probably get you absolutely nowhere but you would have something more concrete if you do decide to take the whole thing to court to get data removed.
