I'm pretty sure Elon misspelled his own name in his signature, too. It's obvious that he forgot how to write in cursive and was remembering mid-way through, but he very clearly wrote his name as "Elon Muk". Like... the last squiggle is just barely a K, but there is a distinct lack of an S, or even a space for an S.

I don't know that we can necessarily critique the spelling of an abstract signature. I mean, mine is pretty unrecognizable as my name; if my initials were XYZ, my signature would kind of look like "xY--", with a little bump at the end that you could kind of interpret as a z.

And famously, the Disney logo looks distinctly like the signature of "Waly Gisnep." Elvis Presley's autograph looks like "Elim rules." John Lennon's looks like the autograph of someone named "Sarah Clancy." Very fittingly, Henry Ford's signature is "Hemmy Turd."

Actually, on that note and in your defense, unreadable signatures kind of seems like a requirement for terrible people. Donald Trump's signature ("Snnnn Suuuuuuugh") is up there looking uncomfortably like Benito Mussolini's "VnnnnnnnWi!," Zuck's "Mr Zz" kind of reminds me of Adolf Hitler's "by Him" signature, and while I can't read Devanagari or Cyrillic, Sundar Pichai's signature sure does call to mind Josef Stalin's.

But it's a thing for not-fascists, too. Kurt Vonnegut's signature is just a line drawing of his head with the letter "t" somewhere in his hair, Emily Dickinson's is literally just her first name, Ruth Bader Ginsburg's looks like "Puth Badu Jinobung," and Charles Dickens' signature looks like it says "Snarls Wickens" (which in hindsight would be a great band name)--and they were some of the most literate people of all time.

That's one thing, but like... Can we take a moment to appreciate how shit his signature looks? It's not just unreadable, it has zero style. Isn't he supposed to be a CEO or something?

Of all the things we can criticize him for, we’re nitpicking a signature? Mine looks like absolute dogshit.

It would basically take an afternoon for you to come up with one and practice it enough to use it. That's how I got mine as a child. It doesn't have to be cursive, it doesn't even have to be your name, and it's not hard at all to do

I don't care what most people's looks like, but if you're going to have it appear on people's paychecks or official documents seen by the public?

I think in that case, it does reflect on you as a person. It's like showing up to the store in boxers and a stained wife beater... It's legal, and I don't care if you dress strangely or even go naked in your own home, but people should have enough respect for themselves to at least wear athletic shorts in public. Or throw on a bathrobe or something

It's a very very low bar, but if you can't meet even that it's a cause for genuine concern about your well being. Everyone should have some level of dignity as a person

I can't think of a single person in my life under the age of 40 that has a "nice" signature. I'm not even sure they teach cursive in school anymore. We're basically forced into it because it has legal importance. Mine is trash and varies from one to the next.

Mine has style. It's not fancy or intricate, but it's a nice mix of sharp and curving lines for the prominent characters that can be read if you already know what it says, and I can fire it off in about two seconds with a nice rasping sound

I learned cursive very briefly when I learned handwriting, but I've never really used it. I still can barely read it. I spent a little time in grade school coming up with it with some good suggestions from my older sister (since it didn't have much style in real cursive), but it's not like I put very much effort into it. I just decided one day if people were going to make me sign my name on things, I didn't want it to look terrible. And for reference, my handwriting is shit, barely readable to the average person

Literally anyone can do it. It doesn't have to be cursive, it doesn't have to be readable, I once knew someone illiterate who just neatly printed out their name all caps. There's no rules to it, it doesn't even have to be cursive, it doesn't even have to spell your name, it's entirely a matter of style

All of these examples, including my first attempts at my own as an actual child, were better than Elon's.

You could do it right now. Take half a day picking out a style, you could look at fonts for reference, fill just a couple pages to practice, and you're done. Hell, you could hire someone on fiver to design it for you if you wanted. Either way, it'll naturally become easy and faster as you use it

For most people, it really doesn't matter that much, I wouldn't comment if the average person didn't have a good one. But if I were going to be a CEO or politician, where other people might actually see it? Where it's going to end up on people's paychecks? I'd go back to the drawing board and put a little more than an afternoon into it. It's just a matter of dignity
