I remember a news story about a dutch guy years ago who kept the stem packed up for the winter after harvesting and after about 15 years it was basically a tree.

I've heard of guys doing that but alas I think my winters are too harsh, it'll get down to -40 with the wind chill and the frost line is like 48" deep
