I hope you’re all hanging in there . I wanted to come back with another update about the eight queer refugees who recently arrived in Gorom from Kakuma kenya
Since my last post, I’ve been speaking with them again and thinking more about what could actually help them beyond just getting through the next few days.
There’s one part of their story I haven’t shared with you yet.
One of them David, used to work in a bakery in Kakuma town.That work gave him a way to support himself and save some money.
After everything that happened there and the repeated attacks and insecurity, he ended up using some of his savings to help other people get to safety too.
Now that they’re in Gorom, he has an opportunity to start doing bakery work again. But he doesn’t have the money he needs to get started.
The hope is that if we can help him get the basic equipment and workspace he needs, he can start earning again and eventually help provide some income for himself and the others.
So I also wanted to finally be transparent about the amount we’re hoping to raise.
Here’s what we’re hoping the $2,990 can help with:
- Safe shelter — rent, basic building materials, fencing and labour
- Food & clean water — food supplies and drinking water
- Sleeping essentials — mattresses, blankets and mosquito nets
- Basic necessities — clothing and other urgent essentials
- Medication — ARVs and other necessary medicines
- Cooking needs — gas and basic cooking supplies
- David’s bakery — workspace rent and basic bakery equipment so he can restart his work
I know $2,990 is a lot of money and I don’t expect one person to cover it.
The goal is simply to help these eight people get somewhere safer, have the basic things they need and hopefully create a small opportunity for them to start rebuilding some stability for themselves.
